Swedish duo Plod operates less than a vowel sound away from London's Plaid (ex-The Black Dog gents Ed and Andy). The two twosomes are very much of the same mindset, bundling the juiciest and most luscious of synth-sweet nothings with lilting techno tracks. As with Plaid, hip-hop's stealthy shadow rarely falls far from Plod's anything-but-plodding productions. Smartly programmed breakbeats hip-hop, skip, skate, and scramble across "Which is Stronger--Karate or the Tiger?," detonate throughout "ass.mp3," and skim the faceted glints and glimmers of "On the Contrary (Au Contraire Mix)" and "Markkinal."
An extra ounce of bounce buoys the brief, bubbly "Hinken;" the moodier "Om Man Blas Dom I Nosa Sa Nys Dom," Rhodes-flavored "Eucalyptus," and the noir-scented "It Must Be Elva A En Halv" coast along with dreamlike facility. The irreverent-if earnestly ridiculous-titles "What Happens to the Hole When the Cheese is Gone?" and "That Stench Again? It Must Be Wednesday" are attached to PILLOW TALK's most sublime conceptions. Such humor goes a long way toward setting Plod well apart from other talented instrumental-electronica artisans.
