Ritmia is an enormously talented new quartet from Italy whose music is firmly rooted in pan-European instrumental folk music but also strikingly progressive in the most positive sense. Using mostly acoustic instruments (guitars, reeds, small drums, accordion) and tastefully understated pop technology (electric bass and guitar, and very subtle synthesizer) they have constructed four intricate suites, which are completely spell-binding, full of heart and humor, and refreshingly original without ever sounding contrived or trendy. Atop this lush soundscape are set four impressionistic short poems (in Italian), which add texture to the music, but never intrude or distract. This is one of those rare finds that commands your attention as soon as the needle drops and satisfies all the way through; a seamless debut album with profound depth, it promises many rewarding listenings to come.
