AllMusic Review by Timothy Monger

Palimpsest is the third offering from Bristol-based instrumental trio Three Cane Whale, whose dazzling micro-chamber folk has earned them accolades from around the U.K. Known for recording entirely live with no overdubs at locations bearing some sort of aural mystique, members Alex Vann, Pete Judge, and Paul Bradley set up shop at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in Wiltshire for three days in June 2015. The sessions resulted in a prolific 21 tracks ranging from intricate late-afternoon horn and bouzouki percolations to lonesome piano meditations and evocative harp and bowed psaltery musings that sound as though they're from another age. Throughout the proceedings can be heard sounds of meadow and babbling brook, presumably captured around the studio's bucolic grounds. Produced by Portishead's Adrian Utley, Palimpsest is unique in how it stretches out in a variety of directions, feeling vaguely familiar and yet distinctly unclassifiable. This is a rare compositional feat from an inventive trio of players whose gift of nuance makes it all sound unnervingly easy.
