Original 7 is part composed material, part sound collage, and combines studio and live recordings. All tracks are titled "Head Shop" with a number. They feature a wide array of players, from regular sidemen Chris Turner (harmonica) to saxophonist Walter Malli, bassist Werner Dafeldecker (both featured on the superior Hot Burrito #2, so some of the material could come from the same sessions), and trumpeter Franz Koglmann. Some pieces focus a lot on textures, something highly unusual in Chadbourne's book. The material with Malli and Dafeldecker stands out, mostly because it has barely been altered. Other sections of the work are heavily overdubbed -- at times there are two different, unrelated performances playing simultaneously, rendering them unlistenable. The last minutes on the CD contain a handful of short tracks, vignettes, or bloopers, where the Doctor's live humor takes the lead. "Head Shop #7" (actually the first track) features some very strong blowing and explodes in every direction. This CD is hectic, confused, and often pointless -- "qualities" found in all of Chadbourne's multi-source basement experiments. For the die-hard fan only. Others have plenty other interesting titles to choose from.
