The debut album from Aavikko was somehow a disappointment. One would have expected the bandmembers to put some effort into production, but they didn't, and the punkish attitude still didn't compensate for the poor sound quality. But now that they've moved from indie Bad Vugum to Spinefarm's Hawaii Sounds imprint, there are slight upgrades in the sound. This could also be due to Aavikko's change to real Yamaha synths but, for whatever reason, the whole sound is no longer raw and doesn't seem incomplete. Also, the drum sound is much improved, therefore making the whole album sound smoother. There are also some changes in the songs themselves: They are well conceived and even have some hit potential (as silly as that may sound when referring to Aavikko). So all the shortcomings of Derek! were fixed on Oriental Baby, provoking interest in the direction Aavikko would take on its next release.
