With On the Speakers, one-time Creeper Lagoon co-frontman Ian Sefchick returns to steer a new quartet that boasts the same variety of bombastic modern rock anthems that made 2001's sadly overlooked Take Back the Universe and Give Me Yesterday so exhilarating. The guy's a wrecking ball of swooning (albeit increasingly predictable) choruses like those that make the office romancer in "Click Your Heels" and the don't-quit-me-babe rocker "Could I Be Right" so gratifying. Sefchick and his new bandmates -- guitarist Scott Ford, drummer Anthony Improgo, and bassist Dan Horne -- really impress on these six cuts, despite their own uncertainties. On "Sweet Dreams," Sefchick asks, "Will I fly, or will I burn?" As the song soars out from underneath this thought and the group hits its stride, all bets are on the ascent of On the Speakers.
