Best known for her collaboration with her then-husband, altoist Sonny Simmons, the powerful trumpeter Barbara Donald recorded two excellent albums for Cadence in the early '80s. This particular set, cut live in Olympia, WA, features Donald with Carter Jefferson (who doubles on tenor and soprano) with a septet. Surprisingly, the music is mostly in a hard bop rather than free vein, with such songs as Cedar Walton's "Bolivia," Thelonious Monk's "Well You Needn't," and Donald's "Blues for You" receiving relatively straight-ahead but passionate treatment. It's worth searching for.
