The track listing for this collection of rock & roll hits of the '50s and '60s looks very promising, full of important hits and seminal artists from the first great era of rock, but giving the disc a listen tells a different story. Many of the performances on Oldies & Goodies, Vol. 1 are latter-day re-recordings rather than the original versions fans have come to know and love, and in some cases they've included alternate performances rather than those by the best-known artists (instead of Eddie Cochran's version of "Summertime Blues," we get a cover by Rusty York, and though Chubby Checker was the man who made "The Twist" a global smash, the version included is by the song's author, Richard Berry). Casual listeners may not notice the difference, but folks who are serious about their oldies would be best advised to steer clear of this disc.
