Over the course of five discs, this box set chronicles the career of one of England's most influential prog-rock bands. Family was on the front lines of prog, having grown out of the late-'60s psychedelic era, and with Roger Chapman's full-throttle vocals leading the way, they charged through the '70s with a bold, ambitious sound. As its title indicates, this set includes the early-'70s compilation OLD SONGS, NEW SONGS which contains early singles alongside some unreleased cuts, but it goes that collection one better by spreading the concept out over multiple discs. The end result is simultaneously a gathering of the finest moments from Family's official albums and a bevy of previously unreleased material, of both studio and live provenance (though it should be noted that some of the live tracks have appeared as bonus cuts on recent reissues).
