Anyone who has lived in a city with a large German population -- whether it's Munich, Berlin or Hamburg or Chicago, New York or Philadelphia -- is well aware of Oktoberfest. An annual festival celebrating German culture, Oktoberfest is a tradition in both European and American cities. The music of choice at Oktoberfest is polka, which is what the band Oktoberfest embraces on the entirely instrumental At the Country Fair. Those who have attended Oktoberfest gatherings should be quite familiar with "Sine Cura," "Der Froliche Wandersmann," "Zum Volksfest" and other traditional German polka songs heard on this CD. Unfortunately, the liner notes are poor -- it would have been nice to read about the history behind "Es War Einmol Ein Creuer Husar," "Schwarze Amsel" or "Die Lustigen Hannoveraner." Many world music releases boast comprehensive liner notes, and At the Country Fair is certainly deserving of that. The music itself, however, is as enjoyable and uplifting as it is exuberant.
