Bandoneon masters Troilo and Di Sarli were two of the greatest names from one of the great tango periods, the 1940s. As was the norm at the time, in the recording studio at least, the cuts on this reissue mostly backed the basic group with strings, but Di Sarli is front and center throughout. Several well-known numbers appear on both CDs in different versions, a rare opportunity for close comparison between different musicians. Maure by contrast was one of the most popular of tango singers, of a slightly later period than Gardel and not nearly as famous internationally, but a vector of the mature popular idiom.
