Focusing on bluegrass-influenced country-folk rambles that play like old favorites on first listen, Nitpickers' debut is wonderfully and fully realized. While there is undeniable bluegrass influence in the mix of songs like "Borrowed Time" and the hot picking of "Cashed in My Old Life," Nitpickers certainly have no fear of strong melodies nor of stepping well beyond the boundaries of the genre to follow an adventurous whim. The surreal carnival feel, bolstered by otherworldly bass vocals, of "Tunnel Road" very much recalls Tom Waits. While the strange, frantic rockabilly tinted bluegrass of "5th of July" and the impressive Celtic influenced "Jig It to Beaver" further reveal the band's accomplished eclecticism. In short, Nitpickers' debut is highly enjoyable and quite worthy of repeated listens.
