Former IRS and MCA band the Balancing Act has been gone for ten years. But its leader, Jeff Davis, is not only still around in Niagara, he's still paying attention to the music scene, past and present. He litters his lyrics with references to MC5, Teenage Fanclub, Carly Simon, I think Robert Johnson, and others. For the most part, though, the music is bit of a throwback new wave record (more interesting art rock new wave, not the guys with skinny ties, polka dots, mop tops, and robotic synths), with one really excellent tune. "Kill a Popstar," the only up-tempo piece, and the only one to really catch my fancy (though all the songs are OK), is just one example, however, of Davis' excellent words. He is a clever and observant fellow who knows his way around rock fans/musicians' lifestyle pratfalls, and can attack with either humor ("Kill a Popstar") or serious pleading (the "get help" coke rehab plea of "Sugarbowl"). What a pleasure cogent lyrics are! (P.O. Box 7569, Berkeley, CA 94707;
