Lee Baby Simms's 2006 full-length MYSTERY LOVES COMPANY is appropriately titled. Wispy, spooky, and evocative, Simms's swirling instrumentals weigh in somewhere between Ennio Morricone, the Shadows, and trip-hop. With twangy guitar, reverb-drenched effects, shimmering beats, and just a dash of avant-garde sensibility, Simms's music comes across like the soundtrack to a highbrow, fog-enshrouded noir film. MYSTERY LOVES COMPANY's ability to unsettle is outweighed only by its ability to entice.
