AllMusic Review by

My Wild Life, the sole album by Chapel Hill indie rockers Grover, a trio led by Let's Active's Angie Carlson and featuring future stars Chris Phillips (Squirrel Nut Zippers) and Dave Burris (Jolene; he replaced Andy Ware during the sessions), is pretty frustrating. While most of the album plods along under the weight of unimaginatively grungy guitar parts, there are enough really good songs here to make the listener wish he could hear them better. The title track is a perfect example; a simple "second verse same as the first" pop/rocker with a great, spirited chorus, "My Wild Life" is good enough to give the Blake Babies a run for their indie rock money, but the song is barely audible under the multiple guitar overdubs. A cleaner, more stripped-down mix (Carlson's ex, Mitch Easter, produced four tracks, which largely sound much better than Kevin Salem's efforts) would have helped considerably. Even with the noisy production, though, direct and unvarnished songs like "Yeah I'm Dumb" and "Superhero" pack a wallop.
