The former Mary My Hope frontman's solo debut is captivating. Like the late Jeff Buckley, Hall lets it all out emotionally (he is more of a rocker than Buckley). The rawness may initially repel the listener, but after several listens it begins to haunt and draw you in. Every song is an experience. Indigo Girl Amy Ray makes a guest appearance. A different arrangement of the song "Spade," entitled "Black Is Black," also appears on Hall's Pleasure Club.
