AllMusic Review by

Brilliantine is the solo project of Dambuilders bassist/vocalist Dave Derby -- on My Life and the Beautiful Game, Derby drops some of the Dambuilders' more spastic tendencies in favor of melodic, low-key pop. His new sound is certainly no revolution, but the consistent and pop-oriented tracks on My Life are solid, pleasant and generally appealing, with the addition of guests like Ivy's Dominique Durand and Small Factory's Phoebe Summersquash adding spice and variety. Given Derby's traditional pop approach, the album can only be as good as his songwriting -- which is decent and consistent but never approaches anything remarkable.
