This two-disc set of music from the late great Ray Charles includes a brief 11-song set of early jazzy and blues-based performances, along with a DVD documentary of his life and an additional 60-minute documentary on the history of American pop music. Nothing here is exactly essential, and the music tracks are hardly Charles at his soulful peak, but the whole package forms a nice introduction to his legendary career for listeners who are new to his work (how many of those can there actually be?). Most, however, will find the song selection here to be rather cursory and atypical of Charles' mature sound.
