World-reknown changgo master Kim Duk Soo emerges again, this time on an eclectic solo work that spans styles ranging from popular Korean rap to heavy metal to avant-garde improvisation. This recording lacks the central unity that the SamulNori albums maintain. Every track shines with virtuosity, thanks to his usual pack of guest stars, including Rick Iannacone, Linda Sharrock, Wolfgang Puschnig, and Jamaaladeen Tacuma. Also of note here is New York violinist Eugene Park of Th Ast Side Band, featured on "Doddanbae," an incredible violin and changgo duet. While this feels more like a greatest-hits package and at the same time pulls further away from the traditional Korean elements (at least in style) that made the SamulNori recordings so enjoyable, this still is an enjoyable disc with some incredible moments.
