The 1982 release Motive Series is a 12-track collection of highlights from Chuck Berry's late-'60s recordings for Mercury. This means that the versions of "Roll Over Beethoven," "Sweet Little Sixteen," "School Days," and "Carol," among his other classic songs, are not original recordings but rather remakes cut anywhere from five to ten years later, while the rest of the record is filled out with pretty good Mercury LP cuts like "Louis to Frisco" and "Club Nitty Gritty." While this is hardly horrible it's certainly not what anybody looking for a good Chuck Berry comp would want -- nor is it a good overview of his Mercury sessions.
