Nostalgia continues in Most Popular Movie Themes, although for a change these are not updates of old Cugat records. Nor are they drawn from the many MGM films in which Cugat appeared. Fortunately, these are new versions or new tunes recorded in stereo and in various Latin or Brazilian styles. The bossa nova is a nice change from Cugat's earlier sambas, and the many quirky instrumental solos have a definite (Mercury producer) David Carroll ring to them. This is a good step for Cugat that will make all his Mercury work cheesy but usually interesting, sometimes great. With such solid tunes as "Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah," and Nino Rota's "La Dolce Vita," and "Over the Rainbow," Most Popular Movie Themes is jaunty, pleasant, brightly executed, and not at all a bad idea.
