Subtitled "Echoes From Storyville, Vol. 2," this follow-up album to pianist Butch Thompson's If You Don't Shake (a set of duets with drummer Hal Smith) has three fine leftover tracks from the latter session plus nine enjoyable trios with cornetist Charlie DeVore. Only four of the dozen selections can be considered classics, and this particularly strong set revives such forgotten tunes as "Bedelia," Clarence Williams' "Brown Skin, Who You For," "Rag Bag Rag," and "Home in Pasadena." DeVore's melodic yet sometimes heated cornet is a major asset, as is Smith's colorful drumming. As for pianist Thompson, he has been near the top of his field since the 1970s. Highly recommended.
