This is a fun group. The Dalton Gang is a little big band led by guitarist Willy Dalton and comprised of trumpet, trombone, three saxophones and a five-piece rhythm section. Dalton wrote all but one of the dozen selections performed by the group on their debut and the music is filled with catchy melodies, infectious rhythms and consistently strong solos. The styles range from Latin jazz to light funk and charts that could be played by larger stage bands. All of the horns (trumpeter Vinny Cutro, trombonist Conrad Zulauf, Jr., altoist Mark Friedman, tenor player Tom Hamilton and baritonist Tom Boras) get to solo, and the spirit of the group on a whole is quite winning. Worth investigating.
