The video of this lovely ballad was released just prior to the digital single, and it racked up over 25 million views, which helped the actual release reach a number one debut spot on numerous airplay and download Latin charts simultaneously -- something that had never happened before. The performance video, shot in a firelit wine cellar near Barcelona, features Maná dressed in their trademark street wear sitting around a radiantly pregnant Shakira wearing a long grey dress, hair in small braids, with a simple shawl around her shoulders; the visuals are simple but arresting, just like the music. "Mi Verdad," co-written by Fernando "Fher" Olvera and George Noriega, is a midtempo ballad adorned with nylon-string and electric guitars, acoustic bass, hand percussion, and a whining pedal steel that sparsely haunts the backdrop. This is a deeply poetic love song in the grand Latin tradition, where personal truths are juxtaposed with eternal ones--about parenting. Olvera's and Shakira's voices (this is her first track in Spanish since 2012), lay out the difficulties of the human condition in society, where individual lives are haunted by lies coming at them from every corner in the world and subsequently passed on in interpersonal and familal relationships; where "truth" has become so loosely defined its meaning is blurred to the point of near disintegration. The singers relay that the only hard and unmovable one lies in the heart; it is a guiding light: "...Tú eres la luz de mi vidatú/Eres la voz que me calmatú/Eres la lluvia de mi almay eres toda mi verdaderes toda mi verdad." The naked, searing soul in the singers' voices is plainly evident, tender but steely. It digs under the surface of the melody to allow the world weariness and relief at finding refuge in the lyrics to wash over the listener. And it doesn't matter whether or not you speak Spanish it's all there in the grain of the singing--besides, there are fine translations available on the internet. While the song was an enormous hit on the Latin charts (topping several simultaneously upon release), it also belongs on Anglo charts in contemporary country, adult contemporary and adult alternative. "Mi Verdad" is one of the first truly great singles of 2015.
