Meteor Review

by Mark Richardson

This 12" single contains two lengthy pieces that offer a rounded portrait of one of Japan's finest electronic producers. The title track is a playful song in the mold of Takemura's work as Child's View. Skittery electro beats, a sonic palate derived from Nintendo, and a robotic vocal combine to convey feelings of sadness, innocence, longing, and (ultimately) joy. "Meteor" was later added as a bonus to the CD version of the Sign EP. The stunning "Wax and Wane" fills the B-side of this single, showcasing Takemura's skill in the CD manipulations pioneered by Oval. As ever, Takemura's processing technique is never dry or academic, and his treatments of frequent collaborator Aki Tsuyuko's voice, combined with percussion patterns that seem inspired by Steve Reich, are beautiful and deeply affecting.
