Poofy hair metal has been taken more as a laughable joke since grunge took over the radio waves back in early 1992. Since then, there have been a countless number of parodied metal covers that are always funny no matter what style they're in. This time around -- as if one couldn't tell from the title -- Metalliska features an array of ska bands doing skanked-out renditions of various metal classics from the '80s. Half of this has straightforward, third wave punk-ska renditions (Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, Thumper) while the other takes a gentler approach of Jamaican roots (the Slackers' version of Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive" is a prime example). Even if this idea has been done before, the humor factor is still pretty high. And as it reads in the liner notes, "The Gods made heavy metal and it's never gonna die." Amen to that.
