The Armenian culture is apparently one of the oldest in western Asia. Armenians were the first to work with iron, a technique they taught to the Greeks to defeat the Mycenaeans. Christianity was adopted by Armenia around the fourth century; the Armenian Catholic church was not formed until the 18th century. One of the most important Armenian liturgical centers is on the island of San Lazzaro, home of the Mekhitarist order, which was founded in the 18th century. Some of the hymns heard on this CD date as far back as the fifth century, but most of them were compiled in the 11th century. The Mekhitarist order was able to maintain this longstanding tradition.
