Trumpeter Max Kaminsky's first recording as a leader in a decade finds the veteran Condonite jamming with cornetist Jim Cullum Junior's Happy Jazz Band. The rather informal session, which includes two cuts without Kaminsky from the following day's concert, matches Max and Cullum with clarinetist Bobby Gordon, trombonist Mark Hess (who takes an unaccompanied piano solo on "Garage Blues"), pianist Cliff Gillette, banjoist Jim Newell, Buddy Apfel on sousaphone, and drummer Harvey Kindervater. Label producer Johnson McRee takes a vocal on "Spain." The music is Dixieland-ish, but includes a few newer originals like "Jim Cullum Sr. Stomp," "Tex-Max" and "Blanquita." Joyful music that finds the principals in excellent form, but this LP from the defunct Fat Cat's label will be difficult to find.
