Oklahoma collective Colourmusic ramped up their musical collaborations over the course of a lengthy friendship that formed when Nick Turner and Ryan Hendrix met in college. Bonding over a shared love of experimental music, the two formed Colourmusic in 2005, eventually filling out the band with the addition of a bassist and drummer and completing two full-lengths and a few singles of watery, psychedelic pop. Third album May You Marry Rich continues the band's exploratory and explosive craft, offering up groove-heavy cough syrup-paced rock blasts like "Dreamgirl '82" as well as more subdued washes of ambient feedback, texture, and angular chord changes on "Horse Race." Somewhere between the distorted pop sensibilities of the Flaming Lips, Radiohead's dour songwriting lens, and Panda Bear's dreamy atmospherics, Colourmusic put together 12 forward-moving tracks that offer both exciting challenges and low-key delights.
