Mass is a German alternative metal band that loves contrasts. When a metal band's guitar riffs are as brutal and blistering as Mass', one would ordinarily expect the vocals to be equally forceful and just as intense. But the vocals on this self-titled CD (which was recorded in Munich and Dusseldorf) are neither forceful nor intense. The riffs that vocalist/guitarist Robert Merdzo provides show no mercy; he loves slow, brutally aggressive, bonecrushing riffs that are full of distortion. But his vocals are quirky, eccentric, and odd rather than intense. It's a strange combination, to be sure, but it's one that works surprisingly well on unorthodox offerings like "Captain Spaceheart," "Lightyears Ahead," and "Riding the Machine." This type of contrast -- intensity combined with eccentricity -- has also worked well for Primus, but while Primus' specialty is a bizarre mixture of alternative rock and funk, Mass is very much an alternative metal band. For those seeking something unusual and interesting from alterna-metal, this Mass CD is well worth exploring.
