Talking to Animals' debut album, Manhole, is an appealing set of polished alterna-pop that's geared toward an adult alternative audience. The group rocks harder than some AAA bands, but never hard enough to compete with the likes of Stone Temple Pilots. Instead, the group falls between the fuzzy power-pop of Letters to Cleo and the sharp, melodic pop of Aimee Mann. Vocalist Juliana Nash's captivating presence helps make the album a promising debut.
