Though Long Island has hardly been a hotbed of indie pop heaven, this Hicksville, New York band (recording in Amityville, but that's no horror) would be a big-buzz-blog band by now, by 'zounds, if they were from Portland, Seattle, or L.A., or had just wandered west to Williamsburg. Singer/songwriter Michael Tietjens is like an East Coast Ben Gibbard, in complimentary ways. This EP is not a quindecillion miles away from the catchy, interesting, erudite, early Death Cab from Something About Airplanes through Photo Album, or recent Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin (whose Jonathan James mastered this), with similar knotty guitar parts, building drama, slashing-smashing post-punk rhythms, and Tietjens' tasty tunes and trustworthy laddish voice. And though four-song EPs are incomplete info, the best leave you wanting more -- like this one.
