Look at What the Light Did Now Review

by Andrew Leahey

Feist hit a commercial peak with The Reminder, an international best-seller that earned four Grammy nominations, five Juno Awards, and the 2007 Shortlist Music Prize. It also paved the way for a lengthy tour, which is where Look at What the Light Did Now gets most of its content. Filmed from 2007 to 2009, this documentary highlights the creative storm that fueled the album and its accompanying tour, with an emphasis on interviews and live performances. Those performances make up the bulk of the DVD’s audio disc, a bonus addition that includes two sparse versions of the title track -- one of them featuring harmony vocals by Little Wings -- and several songs from the movie’s “original score” performed by Chilly Gonzales on solo piano. Feist sounds great throughout, with a quirky alto voice that, although imperfect, only seems to break at the right moments. For those who enjoyed The Reminder, it’s nice to hear those songs live, where they're stripped of their studio polish, but not of the laid-back, Sunday afternoon ambience that made the album such a hit.
