Flint, Michigan rapper Ka'Nut comes out with a hard-hitting debut with Look at Em Now. The music falls halfway between Californian gangsta and Midwest hip-hop. While Ka'Nut occasionally falls prey to gangsta cliches, both lyrically and musically, he tempers them with soul influences -- witness the vocals of Ready for the World's Melvin Riley on "50 G's" -- and a fleeting sense of compassion. Look at Em Now can sound isolated on occasion, but it's nevertheless a good showcase for a promising rapper.
