The Alan Bown Set had one side of this LP, the other belonging to fellow British soul band Jimmy James & the Vagabonds. The middle-of-the-pack blue-eyed soulsters offer adequate covers of American soul tunes by the likes of Bobby Hebb, the Temptations, Solomon Burke, and Don Covay on their seven songs. They had released studio versions of a couple of these ("Emergency 999" and "Headline News") on their mid-'60s Pye singles, but otherwise these marked the only time the Alan Bown Set recorded these tunes. Lead singer Jess Roden here sounds about as close to Small Faces lead belter Steve Marriott as anyone else did, though, of course, Marriott was superior. The LP's rare, but all of the tracks can be heard as part of Sequel's Alan Bown Set collection Emergency 999, which also has 14 studio sides they did for Pye from 1965-1967.
