Lives Review

by Mark Allender

These highlights from the Pointless Night Out concert series showcase a broad spectrum of styles and genres, from the avant-noise of "John Hajeski" to the slick jazz of the "Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet" to the ethereal world blend of "Pointless Orchestra." Of special note is a trio known here as "The New Family" comprised of Margo Gezairlian-Grib, Daniel Carter, and Paul Guerguerian -- three musical heavyweights who have worked with artists such as Sun Ra, Philip Glass, and Tan Dun. Their piece "Inspired Relations" emerges from the middle of this recording as a frenetic fury of energy and turbulence. Also notable on this recording is the percussion work of Scott Davis, both a member of Siamese Twins as well as The Umbilical Trio. Tight, dense, and controlled, these pieces are peaks to an otherwise very solid collection of improv.
