Live in Japan, Vol. 1, recorded in 2002, is a series of improvisations by the Diskaholics, whose members include none other than Thurston Moore on guitar, Jim O'Rourke on laptop, and Mats Gustafsson on saxophone. Live is the audio equivalent of a grade-school bully picking on a nerd, slamming his face hard against the marble tile of the school floor, and refusing to let up the pressure even after he's collected his daily lunch money. At times it's improvisational jazz at its finest, and at other moments it's a punishing wall of white noise. But it's an engaging, intense record that will provide enjoyment even after repeat listening sessions all the way through. Here's hoping volume two isn't far behind.
