Here are two takes on the Zaiko phenomenon, the great youth-quake band formed in 1970 which helped set the tone for today's soukous. Zaiko goes for a deeply layered, multi-percussion sound with a tremendous swing which is anything but desperately trendy. Songa-Fiele has plenty of hints of non-zouk outside influences (relatively rare in soukous) and a very well produced warm sound. The live CD, while heir to all the usual problems of live recordings (especially a sometimes very intrusive synth), has some particularly fine singing and remarkably tight arrangements.
