Fans of the Fall may have differing opinions about the best period in the band's long, inventive career, but it's hard to ignore the sheer energy and verve of the group's music in the early 1980s. 1980's GROTESQUE contains "Totally Wired," one of the Fall's all-time greatest anthems, and that tune is served up on this live set recorded in Glasgow in 1981, along with "Printhead," "Prole Art Threat," and others. The ferocious, almost frightening level of artful noise the Fall unleash in concert surpasses the intensity of their studio releases, as this installation of LIVE FROM THE VAULTS shows. Mark E. Smith and company seem on a righteous mission here to kick their listeners square in the teeth. Hold still, it's worth it.
