The five musicians on this set -- drummer-leader Pierre Courbois, trumpeter Eric Vloeimans, tenor saxophonist Fred Leeflang (who doubles on soprano), pianist Willem Kuhne, and bassist Egon Kracht -- are mostly unknown in the United States, but are very talented post-bop improvisers. In fact, the music on this release from the Dutch A Records label can hold its own with its American counterparts. Drummer Courbois wrote all five pieces, which are explored at great length (clocking in between nine and 15 and a half minutes), so there is plenty of room for Vloeimans, Leeflang, and Kuhne to stretch out. Although none of the songs are destined to become standards, the five musicians deserve to be much better known. This set is additional proof as to the universality of jazz.
