Mike Morley's project, Gate, brings an intensely cathartic noise release on the uncompromising and adventurous label Poon Village. The album is comprised of all live recordings by Morley and Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo, including performances in Boston (track one) and NYC (the rest of the disc), where the duo are also joined by Zeena Parkins. The CD comes with beautifully and carefully detailed packaging, containing the sound of thick fuzz; extended noise with reverb, looping, and full-on distortion are in place. The near-psychedelic sonic barrage creates a washed-out space in which sensory overload becomes white noise. The shape-shifting sounds and formless energy combine into a listening experience that seems to hang outside of time and musical structure. Live in Boston/NYC 1994 is both heavy and long enough to cause the listener to either zone out or simply float (somewhat turbulently) along.
