Kenny Vance & the Planotones is a neo-doo wop group formed in 1992 by Vance, a former member of Jay & the Americans. If the concert captured on this DVD is any indication, Vance and his five backup singers and musicians enjoy a warm rapport with their audiences, especially if those audiences are of a certain age and likely to respond to Vance's references to Brooklyn in the 1950s. The group's hour-long set is spiced with covers of doo wop favorites, on which Vance shows off a high tenor and smooth falsetto. But the video itself will disappoint anyone accustomed to professional production values. In essence, it has the quality of an authorized bootleg, with a single hand-held camera simply roaming back and forth in front of the stage and sometimes around back. It looks like the sort of footage the average person taking a consumer videotape camera to the show would have gotten. And the sound isn't much better than what such a camera's microphone would pick up. Kenny Vance & the Planotones may be a fun vocal group to go and see, but this video is really just a home movie in a DVD container.
