Trombonist/arranger Grover Mitchell was with Count Basie's big band from 1962-70 and 1980-84. During the second period, when the Basie band was off, he often put together an orchestra of his own using some of Count's sidemen. This somewhat obscure LP, recorded five days before Basie's death, features the 14-piece Grover Mitchell Orchestra swinging in a Basie groove. The charts (by Eric Dixon, Frank Foster and Bobby Plater) all move, with the emphasis on originals and basic originals. Among the key soloists are altoist Danny Turner (showcased on "It's a Wonderful World"), baritonist Joe Temperley (heard from on "Street of Dreams"), and tenors Kenny Hing and Eric Dixon.
