AllMusic Review by

Bobby Bland had a beautiful voice, one that cried, flowed, and wowed like a perfectly phrased horn solo, and by combining a gospel phrasing with blues and R&B, he, along with Ray Charles and others, invented and defined soul blues in the 1950s and early '60s. This set collects 22 key tracks Bland recorded for Duke Records between 1952 and 1959, many of them with big-band horn ensembles. Along with his signature track here, "Farther Up the Road," this set presents Bland at his iconic best during his most creative period.
