AllMusic Review by

In 2009, Radio Classique asked its listeners to choose their favorite piano music of all time. Les Elections du piano gathers their top 50 choices into one collection. Selections by the instrument's greatest composers are here: Chopin, Brahms, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Schumann, and others. Many are solo works -- such as Bach's Prelude No. 1 from the Well-Tempered Klavier Book 1 and Debussy's Arabesque No. 1 -- but there are also movements from concertos by Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Ravel, Grieg, Shostakovich, and Beethoven. The musical choices should come as no surprise to piano lovers, and neither should the performers on these tracks: Martha Argerich, Rudolf Serkin, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Rosalyn Tureck, Emil Gilels, and Lang Lang, to name just a few. Les Elections du piano may not be a comprehensive survey of the instrument's repertoire or all of its greatest artists, but it is a good introduction that covers the piano's most popular aspects.
