As the continuing reissue work by the LTM label has taken on more and more back catalogs of notable imprints, some of the resultant compilations end up balancing the enjoyable with a sense that a bit of inevitable recycling has kicked in. This could sum up the still otherwise quite enjoyable Les Filles du Crépuscule in a nutshell, where the appreciable intent of the collection -- a showcasing of the many female or female-led acts featured on the Belgian label over the years -- runs up against the fact that over half the selections have appeared on various LTM collections or reissues already. If one is wholly new to the world of either LTM or Crépuscule in general, though, it's an inspired start, while the appearance of acts yet to get a full stand-alone LTM reissue, in some cases having only released a single or two on the original label, expands the portrait of what Crépuscule was further than before. These include the ever more famous in retrospect Malaria!, whose biting "You You" is a starkly beautiful and snarling fusion of synth pop and twangy new wave guitar, and inspired one-offs like the piano/woodwind-led "Ballade No. 1, L'Interrompu" from an EP by artist Marie Delier and Bernthøler vocalist Drita Kotaji. Other random delights include Gabrielle Lazure's "Petit Bateau" and Zwischenfall's dark electro-funk "Flucht '84." When it comes to more familiar names and tracks, perhaps inevitably the collection begins with Antena's still lovely "The Boy from Ipanema" -- Isabelle Antena's solo work is also represented with "Be Pop" while yet another project of hers, the Powaga Sisters, conclude the collection with "J'aime Regarder Les Filles" -- while Anna Domino does a similar multiple turn via her solo "Take That" and Snakefarm's "Banks of the Ohio." Acts like Ludus, Thick Pigeon, Devine & Statton, and the French Impressionists all take bows as well.
