In a league where you are forced to compete with players like Joe Claussell and Kerri Chandler, the men from the Turnstyle Orchestra seem to be holding their own. They are adding to the influx of Afro-beat-fused electronic music sweeping record stores world wide. With their latest release on Guidance, entitled "Latin Soul," they are letting the scene know where they stand. The original mix provides us with a solid house beat entangled with gritty keyboard artistry and dusty samples from old Latin records. They fuse the soul of house music with the flavor of the Latin music, and add their own electronic spice for a stock of soulful grooves. The mid-track bongo breakdown is not to be missed. The "Sonic Soul" mixes focus more on the elements of the original track. They utilize and add to the deep drum patterns and place more emphasis on the atmospheric synths. However, as the title suggests, they lose a little of the Latin flair by leaving out the vocal. The final mix tones the drums down and adds the mystique of an filtered electric guitar playing seductive Latin-style riffs, turning the track into more of a laid-back segue.
