References to other bands tend to fail when it comes to purely pop records like Land of Steady Habits -- sure, there's a bit of a Cars thing in the way these power-pop compositions hum steadily along, there's a bit of an earnest Material Issue aspect to their rock simplicity, and there's almost something of the Ramones in their melodies, but Big Train is dedicated to that elusive pop/rock quality which all bands tend to share, in varying amounts. Land of Steady Habits does a fairly good job with this quality, laying out power chords and stick-in-your-head melodies with a decent amount of consistency -- production assistance from oddball-pop maverick Peter Katis helps out quite a bit as well.
