Brett Lovins, the lead singer for Twang Factor 4, also has his own solo release, La Verkin Thunder, which offers more of his slice-of-life-style songs. Anyone who's ever driven a circuit, be it craft shows, Ren Faires, music gigs, whatever, will definitely relate to the mellow, mildly rueful "Glob in a Car." ("It's been 8 hours since my last meal/I don't feel like a star.") This man knows the highway, all right. "All Ye in Come Free" is another mellow ballad. (Listeners may wish it didn't have the technical flaw of fingers slipping on the strings, but perhaps he'll re-record this one in future.) Lovins does a pleasant acoustic performance here on the introspective "Calling Out," a song he also performs with TF4. This version is quite distinct, as it features his mountain dulcimer playing, which gives it a folk-style sound that falls agreeably on the ears. Fans may wish to compare with the TF4 variation on Escape From Twang Factor 4. Indeed, since Lovins writes songs for both himself and TF4, chances are good that listeners familiar with his work in the group will also enjoy this solo album.
