A fairly standard budget-priced compilation of some of Marlene Dietrich's best work, LA LEGENDE is a fine, inexpensive introduction for the curious. From her early German-language recordings in the '20s through her days as a Hollywood star and a tireless USO entertainer during World War II to her later career as a camp icon and cabaret performer, Marlene Dietrich was one of the most unique and idiosyncratic performers in the public eye. Her chilly, remote persona and deadpan, half-spoken singing style masked a sly sense of humor that gave her world-weary songs an added fillip of ironic wit. Marlene Dietrich was truly one of a kind, and the tracks on LA LEGENDE, including several of her signature songs, are just a taste of what she could do.
